John Panting was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1940, emigrating to London in 1963. From 1964 to 1967 he studied at the Royal College of Art, returning as a much respected teacher. He was appointed Head of Sculpture at Central School of Art in 1972 and held his only London solo exhibition at the Felicity Samuel Gallery the following Spring. During his brief career Panting produced prolifically and exhibited widely in Europe, the United States and New Zealand. He died in a motorcycle accident.
